Type Locality and Naming
Subei Basin. Gu Xiongfei (1955) firstly called the strata as the Niangniangshan bed. The name of Niangniangshan Formation was given at the National Stratigraphic Conference of China (1959). The type locality is in the Hongmushan – Niangniangshan section in the Jiangning County, Jiangsu.

The Niangniangshan Formation consists of a group of alkali-intermediate volcanic clastic rocks.

Shown as Aptian by Xi et al (2019; Cretaceous integrated stratigraphy and timescale of China); but LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb ages arein 131 to126 Ma range (summary in Xing, G.F., et al., 2021, "Mesozoic-Cenozoic volcanic cycle … East China". Jour. Earth Sci.) = late Hauterivian. Regionally, the Dawangshan Fm volcanics in this same Ning-Wu Basin are slightly older (ca. 132-130.5 Ma).
